Google wants display and destination URLs matching

No joke; on April 1st, Google will demand without exception the display URL for an AdWords ad must match the URL for the landing page.

Advertisers who have been creative with their display URLs and received past approval for them are in the minority of AdWords clients. They will be the ones primarily affected by more stringent enforcement in Google's display URL policies going forward.

A post at the Inside AdWords blog said Google will no longer permit certain exceptions to the policy starting April 1st. "This includes, but is not limited to redirects and vanity URLs," they said.

The destination URL for an ad much match the display URL. However, advertisers who use tracking URLs for the destination can keep doing so as long as the landing page URL matches the display URL.

Sub-domains and additional text in display URLs won't cause problems either, as long as the top-level domain of the destination URL matches it.

AdWords clients should see more details about the policy update when Google pushes out alerts to AdWords accounts, the blog said. Google rationalized this change as coming in response to advertiser and user feedback, as well as the usual relevance and quality concerns about the search ad company's main revenue stream.

Yahoo may consider Google alliance, source says

SAN FRANCISCO/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Yahoo Inc (YHOO.O) would consider a business alliance with Google Inc (GOOG.O) as one way to rebuff a $44.6 billion takeover proposal by Microsoft, a source familiar with Yahoo's strategy said on Sunday

Yahoo management is considering revisiting talks it held with Google several months ago on an alliance as an alternative to Microsoft's bid, that source said. At $31 a share, Yahoo believes the bid undervalues the company, two sources said.

A second source close to Yahoo said it had received a procession of preliminary contacts by media, technology, telephone and financial companies. But the source said they were unaware whether any alternative bid was in the offing.

In a memo to Yahoo employees on Friday, which was obtained by Reuters on Sunday, Yahoo leaders wrote: "We want to emphasize that absolutely no decisions have been made -- and, despite what some people have tried to suggest, there's certainly no integration process underway."

FBI aims for world's largest biometrics database

The FBI is embarking on a $1 billion project to build the world's largest computer database of biometrics to give the government more ways to identify people at home and abroad, the Washington Post reported on Friday.

The FBI has already started compiling digital images of faces, fingerprints and palm patterns in its systems, the paper said.

In January, the agency -- which focuses on violations of federal law, espionage by foreigners and terrorist activities -- expects to award a 10-year contract to expand the amount and kinds of biometric information it receives, it said.

At an employer's request, the FBI will also retain the fingerprints of employees who have undergone criminal background checks, the paper said.

If successful, the system, called Next Generation Identification, will collect the biometric information in one place for identification and forensic purposes, the Post said.

Web browser firm files complaint over Microsoft

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - A small Norwegian maker of Web browsers, backed by an industry coalition, has filed the first complaint against Microsoft to the European Commission since the software giant lost a landmark antitrust case earlier this year.

Opera Software said it has complained that Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) illegally ties its Web browser, Internet Explorer, to its dominant Windows operating system.

New Firefox 3 beta available now

The second beta of Firefox 3 has been released ahead of schedule.

Last week Mike Beltzner, Mozilla's interface designer, pegged Firefox 3 Beta 2's tentative release at mid-afternoon on Friday 21 December. On Tuesday, however, after announcing that the beta was finished and ready to download, Damon Sicore, Mozilla's director of platform engineering, said, "We shipped three days ahead of schedule, only 31 days after Beta 1!"

Internet Explorer 8 beta nears release

The first beta of Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) will be released in the first half of 2008, after Microsoft revealed that IE 8 has passed a key web standards test that ensures the browser won't "break" the web.

Microsoft signs rare open-source deal, under EU orders

Microsoft signed a rare deal with an open source software group on Thursday, taking a step towards meeting sanctions imposed by the European Commission for antitrust violations.

"This should inject competition into a market that had become dominated by Microsoft through its abusive behavior," said Jonathan Todd, a spokesman for the European Commission.

The Commission ruled in 2004 that Microsoft (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) must provide interconnection information letting rival server companies operate as smoothly with Microsoft Windows desktop machines as Microsoft's own server software.
